Feed Mission

The Protestant Community Church (PCC) of Medford Lakes has started a new feeding mission and would like to share this easy project with other churches in the Burlington County area. The idea actually started more than fifteen years ago by Maryann Carlson for the Cathedral Kitchen in Camden and well over 50 churches participated.

The PCC has seven recipes that are rotated each month and will run off copies for any other churches interested in joining the mission. For PCC, we have chosen the first Sunday of the month as our tin and recipe distribution day. Those who want to participate that month, pick up their 10x12 aluminum container with the recipe after the service. During the week, the provider makes the casserole and freezes it. The following Sunday, the frozen casserole is brought back to the service and immediately stored in the church freezers. For those who don't have freezer space, or won't be attending the following Sunday, drop their frozen casserole at the church office where it is put in the freezer. Also, for those who miss the pick-up date but want to participate, extra recipes and casseroles are kept at the office.

For PCC, the next step is very simple as Dick Higginbotham, CCC Board member lives in Medford Lakes. He picks up the frozen casseroles and takes them to the center where they are kept frozen until needed. All the CCC cook has to do is to take out the number needed for that day, and bake. In other instances, the casserole can be sent home with a family in immediate need.

We at PCC think this project can be duplicated. If three other churches join, and each chooses a different Sunday, there will be a weekly stream of ready-to-eat food at CCC. If eight or more churches join, the churches will only have to be responsible every other month. This is a new project for PCC. The first month 25 casseroles or about 200 meals were provided. This month 39 tins were picked up. PCC purchased an extra chest freezer for $159 and another larger freezer for CCC for $650 (which they needed anyway). For further information and a copy of suggested recipes call Kathy Roberts at 609-714-3093.
